Gifts from Bangladesh: handmade things worth packing for abroad

By JADUZ Editorial7 min read

Pack things that are light, flat or sturdy: a Nakshi Kantha throw or cushion covers, a jamdani scarf or sari, rickshaw-painted trays, a small Shital Pati mat, brass or well-wrapped kansa bowls, and handmade jewellery. In the US, declare every plant-based craft, such as Shital Pati or straw; in the UK, check plant and allowance rules.

What should you bring back from Bangladesh?

Bring things that are made here, hard to find abroad, and easy to carry: textiles first, then metal, then a few small painted pieces. If you're home for a winter visit and leaving with a suitcase of gifts for family, colleagues and friends, the best choices share three traits. They are light or flat, they won't break, and they carry an unmistakably Bangladeshi craft.

This guide works through what to buy, what it costs according to dated reports, how to pack it and what UK and US customs say. Our handmade gift ideas guide covers gifts for people in Bangladesh; this one is for gifts that travel.

One practical note before you shop. JADUZ delivers inside Bangladesh, and every order is cash on delivery. That suits a visit well: order to the address where you're staying in Dhaka, Chattogram or anywhere else in the country, and pay the courier when the parcel arrives, as the last section explains. It also means you can see and handle each piece before it goes in your suitcase.

Which textiles fold flat in a suitcase?

Textiles are the best travelling gifts: light, unbreakable and easy to fit around everything else.

  • Nakshi Kantha. Layers of cloth quilted together with running stitch, as Banglapedia describes it. A throw or a pair of cushion covers folds to the size of a jumper. In January 2026 Prothom Alo found kantha cushion covers under ৳600 at Karupally and full kanthas from ৳8,100 to ৳14,000 at Kumudini in Dhaka. See our Nakshi Kantha guide.
  • Jamdani. UNESCO describes jamdani as a vividly patterned, sheer cotton fabric woven on a handloom around Dhaka. A sari or a scarf weighs almost nothing. In November 2024 Prothom Alo found Rupganj weavers selling 60 to 80-count handloom saris from ৳4,000, and warned of machine-made polyester or nylon imitations at ৳650 to ৳1,500. Read how to identify original jamdani before you buy.
  • Kantha-stitched small things. Purses and table mats sold for ৳300 to ৳350 at Kumudini in the same 2026 report, which makes them easy gifts for colleagues.

Fold textiles with tissue or a clean cotton cloth between the layers, and keep them away from anything that might leak.

Which metal and clay pieces survive the journey?

Metal survives a suitcase well; clay needs care.

  • Brass and kansa. Kansa, or bell metal, is roughly four parts copper to one part tin, and Wikipedia notes that more tin makes it more rigid and more resonant. It is also heavy, which matters for baggage allowances. The Business Standard reported in 2020 that bell metal in Islampur sold for ৳3,500 to ৳5,500 a kilo, so price and weight rise together. One or two bowls make a better travelling gift than a dinner set. See Brass & Bell Metal.
  • Shokher hari and painted clay. Banglapedia describes sakher hanri as painted earthenware pots decorated with fish, birds and lotuses. The Dhaka Tribune reported in April 2025 that they sold for ৳20 to ৳1,000 in Rajshahi. A small one, wrapped and packed in the middle of your case, can travel. A large one belongs in your hand luggage or stays behind. See Pottery.

As a rule of thumb, bring metal for the people you see once a year and clay for the people you know will treasure it, because clay asks more of the person carrying it.

What about rickshaw art, Shital Pati and jute?

These three say "Bangladesh" at a glance, and each travels differently.

  • Rickshaw art. UNESCO inscribed rickshaws and rickshaw painting in Dhaka as intangible heritage in 2023. The Business Standard reported in 2022 that painters now decorate tea cups, jewellery boxes and trays as digital prints replace hand painting on rickshaws themselves. A painted tray or a tin piece is flat, sturdy and instantly recognisable. See Rickshaw Art.
  • Shital Pati. UNESCO describes it as a mat woven from strips of a green cane called murta, used across Bangladesh as a sitting mat, bedspread or prayer mat. A small one makes a good table mat or prayer mat abroad. It is plant material, so read the customs section below. See Shital Pati.
  • Jute. Banglapedia notes that jute became one of the major raw materials for Bangladeshi handicrafts. Baskets and runners are light, but they are plant fibre too, so the same customs point applies. See Baskets & Weaving.

Rickshaw art is the easiest of the three to carry, and the easiest to explain to someone who has never been to Dhaka.

What are good small gifts under ৳1,000?

You will need more small gifts than large ones: for colleagues, neighbours and the friends who looked after your house. Dated reports point to several options in this range.

  • Kantha purses and table mats: ৳300 to ৳350 at Kumudini, per Prothom Alo in January 2026.
  • Kantha cushion covers: under ৳600 at Karupally, in the same report.
  • Shokher hari: ৳20 to ৳1,000 in Rajshahi in 2025, per the Dhaka Tribune. The small ones pack easily.
  • Rickshaw-art pieces: The Business Standard's 2024 list of gifts for foreign friends included hand-painted rickshaw-art sunglasses at ৳450, and noted that no two hand-painted pairs are identical.

Handmade jewellery is the other easy small gift: it weighs nothing and fits in a pocket. Live prices for pieces on JADUZ are in Jewellery and in the under ৳1,000 listing.

Buy small gifts in sets of the same craft and you can tell one short story about it to everyone who receives one.

How should you pack handmade pieces?

Pack textiles flat, metal wrapped, and clay in the middle.

  • Textiles. Fold kanthas and jamdani with tissue or a cotton cloth between layers. Keep them in a cloth bag rather than sealed plastic if they will stay packed for long.
  • Shital Pati and jute. Roll a mat around your clothes rather than creasing it with a sharp fold. Keep jute dry.
  • Metal. Wrap each kansa or brass piece in a textile, which pads it and stops pieces knocking together. Put heavy metal near the wheels of the case so it doesn't crush anything.
  • Clay. Wrap each pot separately, pack it in the centre of the case surrounded by soft things, and fill the inside of a hollow pot with socks so it can't collapse.

Keep a list of what you're carrying and roughly what you paid. If customs asks, it is easier to answer from a list than from memory, and the next section explains why the total can matter.

What do UK and US customs rules say?

This is not legal advice; check the official pages before you travel, because rules change.

United Kingdom. GOV.UK says you can bring goods into the UK without tax or duty if they are for your own use or to give as a gift, as long as you stay within your allowances. If you go over an allowance, you will have to pay tax and duty on all the goods in that category, and you must declare anything banned or restricted. Separately, GOV.UK says there are rules for bringing plants or plant-based products, like wood, into Great Britain, that the rules depend on the product and the country it comes from, and that Border Force can seize items brought in illegally. If you're unsure, it says, speak to a Border Force officer.

United States. US Customs and Border Protection says every plant or plant product, including handicraft items made with straw, must be declared and presented for inspection. That covers mats and baskets made from plant fibres, such as Shital Pati and jute. CBP says failing to declare agricultural items carries a civil penalty of $300 for a first offence.

Elsewhere, including the Gulf, check the customs authority of the country you're flying to.

Can you order before your flight and pay on delivery?

Yes, as long as the parcel can reach you in Bangladesh before you leave. JADUZ delivers inside Bangladesh, and every order is cash on delivery: you pay the courier when the parcel arrives. Order to the address where you're staying and you can check each piece before you pay.

Plan around your flight date. Every piece on JADUZ shows when it should arrive. Ready-to-ship pieces follow the usual delivery times on the delivery page; made-to-order pieces add their making time, which each piece shows. One delivery fee covers several makers (delivery), so gathering several gifts into one order keeps it simple.

If a piece arrives damaged, wrong or not as described, report it with photos within the claim window (returns) and JADUZ arranges a replacement or a refund, as the returns page explains. Allow enough days before your flight for that, especially for clay or kansa.

Every piece shows its maker and district, so you can tell the person who receives it exactly where it came from. Start with the gift finder or meet the makers.
