Wedding gift ideas in Bangladesh: handmade gifts couples keep

By JADUZ Editorial8 min read

A good wedding gift in Bangladesh is either cash, which every couple can use, or something handmade they will keep for years: a Nakshi Kantha bedcover, a jamdani sari for the bride, kansa or brass tableware, a shokher hari for the tottho, or a name-stitched piece for their new home. Set a budget first.

What is a good wedding gift in Bangladesh?

Start with what the couple will actually keep. The Daily Star's January 2024 guide to wedding gifting observed that most couples have to settle for a variety of toasters and sandwich makers. The same guide called cash the most practical gift ever: crisp notes in an envelope, which, as it pointed out, do not discriminate between the bride and the groom.

Between those two lies the handmade gift: something made by a named maker that the couple will use for years and remember you by. A Nakshi Kantha on their bed, a jamdani the bride wears again at family weddings, a kansa set on their table. Our handmade gift ideas guide covers every craft; this page narrows it to weddings.

Timing matters. The Financial Express notes that December and January are the peak of the wedding season in Bangladesh, when the weather is mild and families are on holiday. Many invitations arrive at once, so set a budget per wedding before you start browsing, then choose by the couple, not by the shop.

What can you give under ৳2,500?

Small budgets still buy real handwork. Every price here is from a dated report; live prices for pieces on JADUZ are on the gift finder and in the under ৳2,500 listing.

  • Kantha cushion covers. Prothom Alo found them under ৳600 at Karupally in Dhaka in January 2026. A pair for the couple's sofa is an easy, useful gift.
  • Kantha wall hangings. Kumudini's kantha wall mats ran from ৳700 to ৳2,200 in the same report.
  • Shokher hari. The Dhaka Tribune reported prices from ৳20 to ৳1,000 among Rajshahi's makers in 2025. A painted pot filled with sweets suits a tottho tray, as the tottho section below explains.
  • Rickshaw-art pieces. The Business Standard reported in 2022 that rickshaw painters now decorate tea cups, jewellery boxes and trays, all cheerful gifts for a first home. We found no dated price for these, so check live prices before you budget.
  • Name-stitched pieces. On JADUZ, made-to-order pieces can carry the couple's names or the wedding date. Prices vary by maker; see Personalised Gifts.

What can you give for ৳2,500 to ৳5,000?

This is the range where a gift starts to become a keepsake.

  • A kantha bed sheet. Prothom Alo found kantha bed sheets at ৳3,000 to ৳4,400 at Karupally in January 2026. It is a handmade gift for a couple's new bed.
  • A simpler jamdani. In November 2024 Prothom Alo found coarse 40-count jamdani at ৳2,500 to ৳5,000 at Dhanmondi Hawkers Market, and 60 to 80-count saris from ৳4,000 direct from weavers in Rupganj. Read how to identify original jamdani before you buy.
  • A kantha-stitched sari. Kumudini's were ৳5,000 to ৳5,500 in Prothom Alo's 2026 report, at the top of this band.
  • A Shital Pati. UNESCO notes the mat is used across Bangladesh as a sitting mat, bedspread or prayer mat. We found no dated price for it, so check live prices on the Shital Pati page.

Within this band, ask what the couple already has. A second kantha is welcome; a second identical tray is not. If you know a sibling or close friend of the couple, ask them quietly what is already on the list.

What about ৳5,000 and up?

At this level you are buying an heirloom, and the craft matters more than the category.

  • A full Nakshi Kantha. Prothom Alo found kanthas from ৳8,100 to ৳14,000 at Kumudini and up to ৳20,000 at Madhobi Mart in January 2026. Our Nakshi Kantha price guide explains what separates the two ends of that range.
  • A fine jamdani. In 2024 Prothom Alo found 80-count jamdani at ৳8,000 to ৳17,000 at Dhanmondi Hawkers Market and fine half-silk from ৳20,000 to ৳1,00,000. Our jamdani price guide breaks this down by yarn count and market.
  • Kansa tableware. Kansa is sold by weight. The Business Standard reported in 2020 that bell metal in Islampur sold for ৳3,500 to ৳5,500 a kilo, so a set weighing a couple of kilos passes ৳5,000. See Brass & Bell Metal.

For a gift this size, ask the maker how it was made and how long it took. A good maker will tell you, and the answer becomes part of the gift when you hand it over.

What suits the bride, the groom and their new home?

For the bride. Jamdani is the obvious choice, and it does not have to be red. The Business Standard reported in 2021 on a designer showing brides in jamdani, and noted that along with the traditional red, matte gold, off-white, mauve or even blue saris can be worn. The Dhaka Tribune reported as far back as 2016 that Aarong was promoting jamdani, muslin and katan saris for the bride and her close family. If you don't know her taste, a jamdani in a colour she can wear to other weddings will get more use than a second bridal red.

For the groom. A Daily Star gift column in December 2025 recommended Kumudini's panjabi selection, alongside its block-printed and hand-stitched cotton saris and its jamdanis. A panjabi is a gift he can wear at the reception.

For the new home. A kantha bedcover, a Shital Pati, kansa or brass for the table, and a painted tray or wall hanging: pieces made to be used every day, not stored in a cupboard. Browse Home Decor and Textiles & Kantha.

Should you order a personalised gift?

A gift with the couple's names or the wedding date stitched or painted on can't be duplicated by anyone else at the wedding. On JADUZ, made-to-order pieces can carry a name, a date or a message, added by the maker. Browse Personalised Gifts or all made-to-order pieces.

The trade-off is time. Made to order means the maker starts after you order, and each made-to-order piece on JADUZ shows its making time, which is added to delivery. For a wedding, work backwards from the date: subtract the usual delivery days from the delivery page, then the making time on the piece. In the December and January peak, when you may have several weddings in a row, order the personalised gifts first.

Spell the names exactly as the couple writes them, in English or Bangla, and check the date twice. A maker stitches what you send.

Cash, tottho or holud: what goes where?

A Bangladeshi wedding is several events, and each has its own kind of gift.

  • The gaye holud. Wikipedia describes the bride seated on a dais while guests apply turmeric paste and feed her sweets, with the turmeric typically sent from the groom's home.
  • The tottho. The groom's family sends elaborately adorned gifts, tattwa or tottho, to the bride's family. Wikipedia lists fish, especially ilish, sweets and clothing among them, and stresses that their value lies in the decorative artistry; they are not dowry. Banglapedia notes that shokher hari is used to carry gifts of fruit and sweets at weddings, which makes a painted pot a natural part of a tottho tray.
  • The wedding itself. This is where guests give, and where cash in an envelope has long been the default, as The Daily Star's guide notes.

A handmade gift can sit alongside cash rather than replace it: an envelope for the couple, a kantha for their home.

Will it arrive before the wedding?

On JADUZ, every piece shows when it should arrive. Ready-to-ship pieces follow the usual delivery times on the delivery page; made-to-order pieces add their making time, which each piece shows. JADUZ calls to confirm each order before the maker packs it.

Every order is cash on delivery anywhere in Bangladesh: you pay the courier when the parcel arrives. If you send the gift straight to the couple or their family, the person who receives the parcel pays the courier, so warn them first. Or have it delivered to yourself and carry it to the wedding.

If a piece arrives damaged, wrong or not as described, report it with photos within the claim window (returns), and JADUZ arranges a replacement or a refund. Leave enough time before the wedding for that to happen, especially with fragile clay or kansa. The returns page has the details.

What makes a good anniversary gift?

The same crafts work, with one difference: you know the couple better now, and you know their home. Anniversaries suit the gifts that need personal knowledge to get right.

  • A kantha with the wedding date stitched in. A made-to-order piece can carry a name, a date or a message.
  • A second piece to match the first. If you gave them a kansa bowl at the wedding, add the plates.
  • A jamdani in a colour she doesn't own. Prothom Alo's November 2024 survey found jamdani from a few thousand taka to lakhs, depending on yarn count and work, so set the budget first and let the colour lead.

Whatever you choose, it should have a maker's name and a place behind it. On JADUZ every piece shows both, and a curator reviews each maker before they can sell. Start with the gift finder or meet the makers.

Questions people ask

What is a good wedding gift in Bangladesh?

Cash in an envelope is the practical default. For something the couple will keep, choose a handmade piece: a Nakshi Kantha bedcover, a jamdani for the bride, kansa or brass tableware, or a name-stitched piece for their home.

How much should a handmade wedding gift cost?

It depends on your relationship and budget. Prothom Alo reported in January 2026 that Dhaka shops sold kantha cushion covers under ৳600, kantha bed sheets at ৳3,000 to ৳4,400 and full kanthas at ৳8,100 to ৳14,000, so there is real handwork at every level.

Does a bride's jamdani have to be red?

No. Red is traditional, but The Business Standard reported in 2021 that matte gold, off-white, mauve and even blue jamdani saris can be worn by brides. A colour she can wear again at other weddings often gets more use.

What goes in a tottho?

The groom's family sends elaborately adorned gifts, tottho, to the bride's family, often fish such as ilish, sweets and clothing. Shokher hari, painted clay pots, are traditionally used to carry fruit and sweets at weddings.

How early should I order a personalised wedding gift?

Work backwards from the wedding date. On JADUZ each made-to-order piece shows its making time, which is added to the usual delivery days, and you should leave extra time in case a piece needs replacing.
